Taraori or Tarori, as it is sometimes called in the local dialect, is a city and a Tehsil (Municipal committee) 16 km north of Karnal in Karnal district in the Indian state of Haryana. It was here that in 1191 CE that the Hindu army under Prithviraj Chauhan had defeated the invading army of Muhammad of Ghaur. The following year Ghauri invaded again and defeated Prithviraj's forces at this same site. A wall around the town is now in a dilapidated condition. A mosque and a tank, said to be the works of Aurangzeb, are still in existence. Taraori is also famous for its Gurudwara (Shishganj Gurudwara)and Basmati Rice. The name of Taraori is extracted from the word "Taraine" (ترائن).
