Sterlitamak (Russian: Стерлитамак; IPA: [stʲɪrlʲɪtɐˈmak]; Bashkir: Стәрлетамаҡ) is the second largest city in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia, located on the left bank of the Belaya River (Kama's tributary), 121 kilometers (75 mi) from Ufa. The city's name comes from the Bashkir language and literally means "mouth of the river Sterlya".[citation needed] Population: 273,432 (2010 Census preliminary results); 264,362 (2002 Census); 247,457 (1989 Census).
