Kishanganj is a town and district headquarter of Kishanganj district in Purnea division of Bihar state, but gographically and culturally it is part of the north Bengal. In ancient times it was part of the mighty Pundravardhana kingdom. Pundravardhana, comprised areas of present-day Rajshahi, Bogra, Pabna (in Bangladesh), and Dinajpur (both in India and Bangladesh)and Kishanganj in Bihar. According to the Damodarpur copperplate inscription of the time of Budhagupta (c 476-94 AD) the northern limit of Pundravardhana was the Himalayas. It is part of the chicken neck of Indian map. It is located at 26°04′46″N 87°56′14″E. Main rivers of this district are Mechi, Mahananda, Kankai. it is the only tea producing district in Bihar. It's one of the most sensitive districts of India, as the borders of this district are very near to Bangladesh,touching Nepal in southeast and north to Uttar Dinajpur and Darjeeling district of West Bengal respectively. It is also considered as one of the backward district of India in terms of Female Literacy rate. As per the statistics 62% of population is Muslim. The language of Kishanganj is SURJAPURI/Rajbongshi, though people can understand and speak Urdu, Hindi. Kishanganj is part of Terai region of Eastern Himalaya. Agri-business and handicrafts is the main occupation here. Kishanganj is known for production of high quality tea and jute. As per a report Kishanganj produces the best quality of Asian tea. In 2009 total export of tea was more than 35 crores.Its climate is very good.
