Ja-Ela is a suburb of Colombo city approximately 20 km north of Colombo city centre Fort, Sri Lanka. The Term Ja-Ela means Javanese Canal and denotes historical the presence of Sri Lankan Malays in the area. The local Malays refer to themselves as orang Java (people of Java) and orang Melayu (Malay people) while the majority Sinhalese community call them Ja-minissu (Javanese people). The Malays were brought to Sri Lanka by the Dutch, who also built these canals for transportation. The economy in Ja-Ela consists of commercial enterprises, office and industrial employment. This suburb is situated on the main road A3, between Negombo municipality and Colombo municipality. There is also a railway station in Ja-Ela on the Puttalam railway line via Negombo. Ja-Ela is situated very close to the Bandaranaike International Airport.
