Yining (Gulja) (simplified Chinese: 伊宁; traditional Chinese: 伊寧; pinyin: Yīníng, alt. spelling: Ining), also known as Ghulja City (alt. spellings: Ĝulja, Kuldja and Kulja, (Uyghur: غۇلجا; Chinese: 固勒扎; pinyin: gùlèzhā; Kazakh: قۇلجا), as well as Ili or Yili, is a county-level city in western Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region of northwestern China, and the capital of the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. Historically, Yining is the succcessor to the ruined city of Almaliq in Huocheng County.
