Gatineau (/ˈɡætɨnoʊ/, French pronunciation: [ɡatino]) is a city in western Quebec, Canada. It is the fourth largest city in the province. It is located on the northern banks of the Ottawa River, immediately across from Ottawa, Ontario, and together they form Canada's National Capital Region. Ottawa and Gatineau comprise a single Census Metropolitan Area. As of 2011 Gatineau had a population of 265,349, and metropolitan population of 314,501 for the Quebec part of the Ottawa-Gatineau Census Metropolitan Area; the full census metropolitan area, including Ottawa and the rest of the Ontario part, had a population of 1,236,324.
