Burhanpur is a mid-size city in Madhya Pradesh state, India. It is the administrative seat of Burhanpur District. It is situated on the north bank of the Tapti River, 340 kilometres (211 mi) southwest of Bhopal and 540 kilometres (336 mi) northeast of Mumbai. The town is named after sufi saint Burhanuddin Gharib of Khuldabad. The city has a Municipal Corporation, and also is one of the district headquarters of the state of Madhya Pradesh.
