Barczewo (German: Wartenburg in Ostpreußen) is a town in Olsztyn County, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, Poland. It is located 20 km NE of Olsztyn. The town dates its beginnings from 1325, and was part of Poland in the years 1466-1772, when it became annexed by Prussia. Repressions and germanisation against Poles followed the annexation as well as organised resistance by Polish population. After First World War the town voted to remain in Germany, subsequently it became part of Nazi Reich and Poles and Jews targeted for extermination as "sub human" were subject to organised terror and murder by German authorities. After defeat of Nazi Germany the town once more became part of a Polish state and the local German population was expelled.
