Atarib (Arabic: أتارب‎) is a Syrian town in the Aleppo Governorate, 25 kilometers west of Aleppo, just 20 km away from the Syrian–Turkish borderline. It is the regional centre of Atarib District. In the 2004 official census, the town of Atarib had a population of 10,657. Atarib is a large trading and agricultural centre in the governorate and the community is characterized with its rural life. An archeological site is located at the top of a hill in the center of the town. During the current the Syrian civil war, the town became subject to much violent bloodshed by the Syrian security forces' crackdown on anti-regime protesters. Since late July 2012, the conflict has spread deeper into the district, causing widespread panic and chaos. As a result, Atarib has become a largely deserted ghost town with almost no population.
