Bhaktapur district, located in the eastern part of Kathmandu valley, is the smallest among the seventy-five districts of Nepal. The district, with Bhaktapur as its district headquarters, covers an area of 119 km² and has a population (2001) of 225,461. The district population was 303,027 in 2011 census, with 9,701 people absent (mostly work abroad).
